Updates from committees

Advocacy Report – Ric Cavanaugh suggested that one role of the Advocacy committee should be to help Breakthrough members become better advocates for clients. Everyone agreed and John R. commented that a presenter from last year spoke on Medicare provider fraud, which was helpful to all concerned.

Gateway Grandparents Network – Betty Reinsch told us about a conference call involving the Brookdale Foundation and eleven Grandparent Support groups that had received $400 to help further their cause.  Betty is hoping to get an additional $4,000 to continue their efforts.

Minority Advocacy Committee– MAC will have the first VillAGE of Many Colors Festival on July 9th, at the Monsanto YMCA, 5555 Page Blvd.  The event will be from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., and will feature an elder speakout  session on the topic of elder abuse and fraud.

St. Louis Times Resource Guide – There will be a Funfest on September 30, from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Maryland Heights Community Center.  The unveiling and distribution of the new Resource Guide will take place and will be open to members until 5 p.m.  Ad sales are good and there has been more interest/ participation from vendors.  The guide is currently accessible via an online portal containing an online data base.  This provides an opportunity for members to access their information and make changes.  The changes must be made a week from Friday (July 11th).  John R. wants to put in information about Long Term Care Insurance.  Debbie suggested the National Association of Insurance Companies NAIC).

Outreach Committee – Wade gave everyone a copy of a survey developed by his committee and asked for input.  Suggestions included adding a preface, demographics, specifics on reasons people attended meetings and removing question #14, to be replaced by the aforementioned question.  Ric Cavanaugh will present on “Intimacy and Sexuality in Long Term Care” at the August meeting.
